History

Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church has a long history in the Pittsboro/Bynum communities area.  Since its beginning in 1779, Mount Pleasant has maintained a rich tradition of Christian worship and service.  The first Methodist church in the area, Mount Pleasant was originally part of the New Hope Circuit.  Since 1972 it has been associated with the Sanford District, recently renamed the Fairway District.

The church has been housed in four buildings since its founding.  The third, a handsome frame structure, was destroyed by fire in 1935.  Remnants from the fire were used in the construction of our sanctuary cross, an enduring symbol of the strength of this congregation.

The present brick building, dedicated in 1983, was remodeled and enlarged later that same year.  Visitors to worship services, weddings and other occasions often express their admiration for the beauty of our sanctuary.  A complete history of our congregation may be found by clicking here.
